THE
ART
OF
WINE
&
FOOD
|

The Art of Wine & Food commenced business in 1990 focused on wine and food-related objects and curiosities. It is regarded as a leader in this field and unique in Australia.
Gastronomic objects are rare. How often would you see a duck press like the one at La Tour d'Argent, La Physiologie du Gout, 19th century menus, absinthe ritual artefacts, postcards of truffle-hunting, rare fungi prints, or early books on wine history or viticulture? These are examples of items that have been available over the years.
Wine related antiques are always popular. Decanters, bottle tickets, champagne buckets, tastevins, champagne flutes, books on wine [or the vine], hydrometers, cooper's tools, vigneron's tools, or ephemera such as wine merchant price lists, advertising posters, wine labels and postcards. Wine publicity is another aspect of what’s on offer. All complimented by prints, engravings, drawings or still paintings of wine and food subjects.
Of all wine related items the most popular historically have been corkscrews.
These are getting harder-and-harder to find and are the subject of specialist auctions as helixophile interest intensifies. In recent years prices have escalated to the point where some collectors have become despondent about the possibility of being able to make additions to their collections. But opportunities still exist. At times we have exceptional corkscrews from our travels in France.
We always also aim to have curiosities related to the fascinating world of gastronomy. We are well known to food stylists, photographers and movie props-buyers after that 'hero shot', or something from a specific period of history. Old pewter, French cutlery, glassware and ephemera such as old menus from us are often featured in lifestyle magazines, advertising or movies.
In 1995 The Sydney Morning Herald selected The Art of Wine & Food as one of Sydney's best 100 shops.
Although we are no longer in retail premises our offerings continues to excite visitors from around the world as we always have an ever-changing array of hard-to-find culinary and wine related objects in stock.
