This is haunting engraving of a young chef wistfully blowing a feather as early morning rays stream through the basement window. The youth seemingly oblivious of his surroundings with other birds awaiting preparation.
Engraved by Albi-born Pierre Salvy Frédéric Teyssonnières [aka Teyssonnières] from a painting by Swiss artist Simon Durand [1838-1896] titled ‘Jeune Cuisinier Plumant une Oie’ - ‘a young chef plucking a goose’. This is a captivating image in its original mount and frame, signed by Teyssonnières in pencil as the artist’s proof and dated 1897 with an attribution.
Simon Durand is represented in museums in Geneva and Pierre Teyssonnière, well known for his views of Bordeaux and the bordelaise.
